Boutique Hotel
The Veranda, a Boutique Hotel located in the vibrant Bo-Kaap neighborhood in Cape Town, South Africa. The Bo-Kaap neighborhood was originally built for Muslim slaves from Southeast Asia, India, Sri Lanka and Indonesia. In 1990, the slaves were freed and allowed to purchase the houses and express themselves through painting the formerly all-white houses in vibrant hues. The neighborhood is a cultural melting pot that reflects its cultural diversity in its Cape Malay cuisine, characterized by fragrant spices. Islam has a strong presence in Bo-Kaap with several mosques scattered throughout the area. From this research we designed a Spice Market, Meditation Room, Outdoor Kitchen and a Spice Tasting Experience with a Spice Bar. Our goal for this project was to respect the neighborhoods history and preserve the culture by introducing key elements of their culture into our hotel. We used local Shwe-Shwe fabrics in our upholstery and took inspiration from the textures and spices of South Africa. Partner: Brenna Gilligan
